Luarca
We entered Luarca from the east and headed for the headland with Faro (lighthouse) de Luarca. There are three sights there to see, the first being Capilla de Nuestra Señora la Blanca. The chapel dates from the 13th century. Here the guide is explaining details of the chapel. The explanation was too fast and my hearing not good enough for me to catch. But it didn't matter, I could look it up later if it interested me. I'm not a history aficionado, unless it's an event that has echoes in the present. Philistine me.We are exiting the chapel in this closer shot.Actually there is a third landmark beyond the chapel, the lighthouse but it is off limits to visitors. The second sight is not on the headland but is Playa de las Arreas down at sea level on the east side.Looks like it might be a bit of bother to get down there. The rugged coastline.A broad view.A panorama of the area. The third sight, which we were also not allowed to enter, is the Luarca Cemetery. Severo Ochoa, born in Luarca and Nobel Prize laureate for Physiology or Medicine in 1959, is buried here. The breakwaters and entrance to the port are the backdrop in the photo.A view of the breakwaters. The cubes in these are unpainted, unlike the ones in Llanes the week before. In this panorama you can see further west along the coast. It was brilliant weather for taking pictures. We got back into the bus and headed down to the town.
